Simulation Technology in Paediatric Emergency Training

Paediatric cardiac arrest is often an avoidable disaster. Sudden unexpected cardiac arrest in a child is relatively rare with more likelihood of warning signs of deterioration presenting initially.  An advanced paediatric resuscitation course was devised and instigated at Royal North Shore Hospital, Sydney four years ago. The main objective is being to educate residents, registrars, and nurses in effective and efficient management of paediatric emergencies. The course is run over an eight-hour day alternating lectures and workshops. More recently the course has progressed in to a differing learning environment with the use of the virtual Paediatric patient utilising the technology from the Sydney Simulation Centre. There is an emphasis on teamwork and crisis resource management in the emergency situation. Examples of human performance issues are examined through case scenario exercises and the use of video debriefing

Course length: 8-hours in Sydney, Australia
Course length: 2-hour overview (locations outside of Sydney)
Speaker: Ella Scott RN,RSCN,BA,MA
Intended audience: Paramedics, ER, Pediatric, Critical Care Nurses, & Respiratory Therapists

Surviving Neonatal Resuscitation

Formally known as N.A.L.S., this course will provide attendees with an American Academy of Pediatrics Neonatal Resuscitation Provider (NRP) card after successful completion of skills stations and a written test. Unlike typical NRP courses, all lectures and didactic information are presented from the perspective of the EMS, ER, & transport environments. In addition to the required NRP material, this course reviews the essential components of a rapid neonatal assessment, as well as initial/transport management of common (& not so common) medical & surgical neonatal emergencies. Surviving Neonatal Resuscitation is unlike any NRP course you have taken and will help give you the skills and confidence that you and your patients need to survive. For more information or a course outline, please call 1-888-280-7337 or e-mail us at education@peds-r-us.com.

Tiny Tots Trauma Training
A course that deals only with aspects of pediatric trauma

Injury is one of the most significant health problems affecting children in the western world and is the leading cause of death for all children over one year of age. The survival of children who sustain major trauma or life threatening trauma depends on the resuscitation in the emergency department and access to emergency surgery.
The principles of managing pediatric trauma victims are much the same as for adult patients however particular aspects of resuscitation and management require detailed attention because of the anatomical differences encountered in children. The following objectives will be addressed throughout the day:

§         Early assessment, resuscitation and management of the injured child

§         Specific characteristics in managing the pediatric airway

§         Practical skills in airway and vascular access

§         Specifics of pediatric burns management

§         An understanding of infant trauma

“Beyond Calling 911”
Surviving Until EMS Arrives

This specially designed course offers medical education for school teachers, pediatric office staff employees, athletic coaches, and day-care centers. In an emergency situation, calling 911 is the most natural and appropriate thing to do. However, when Emergency Medical Services (EMS) are delayed or in the crucial minutes it takes for them to arrive, proper care of an ill or injured child is essential for the best outcome. Bystanders with good intentions try all types of remedies such as putting sticks into the mouth's of seizure patients, elevating legs or covering with coats, but these things are not always in the best interest of the patient. During this four-hour course, persons that interact with children on a regular basis will be taught the necessary techniques to offer potentially life saving interventions for children. The American Heart Association's Basic Pediatric Life Support course and the American Safety Council's standards will be utilized for instruction in the following areas: C.P.R., first aid, blood-borne pathogens, personal safety and medical emergencies. Ultimately this course will offer a review of what to do in order to help children and you survive until EMS arrives.

Course length: 4 hours
Speaker: Don Hess
Intended Audience: As stated above

Certified Critical Care Nurse (CCRN) Review Courses (Pediatric)

Certification, in general, is a mechanism in which the public and employers are able to identify practitioners who have met certain standards in their particular nursing specialty. Because of this, there are certifications in obstetrics, oncology, surgical nursing, critical care, flight nursing, etc. CCRN is the certification specific to pediatric or adult critical care nursing. It measures the attainment of a defined body of nursing knowledge pertinent to these particular specialties. This two-day course will review the core material that is potentially covered on the pediatric CCRN examination, as well as introducing various test taking strategies to maximize one’s chances of successfully passing the CCRN.

Course length: 16-hours, (2) 8-hour days

Dispelling the Myths
Pediatric Acute Care Issues

As with many areas in healthcare today we are faced with continued challenges. One of our greatest challenges in the area of pediatric care is conflicting orders. Often times care plans vary from physician to physician and can definitely lead to anxiety when caring for young patients. This presentation will detail what drugs are commonly administered to children for various medical emergencies, their routes & rates of administration, mechanisms of action, and common (& not so common) side effects. Acute management of pediatric patients presenting with seizures & diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) and many of the complex associated issues will also be discussed. Lastly, new information on child abuse and non-accidental injuries will have you re-evaluating certain childhood injuries. This program will cover these as well as many other fascinating and essential pediatric facts in an attempt to dispel the myths of pediatric acute care.

Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC)

While only five percent of pediatric emergency department (ED) visits represent true life-threatening medical or surgical emergencies, acute illness still remains a dominant source of unnecessary pediatric deaths. In many instances, these preventable pediatric deaths are the result of delayed recognition and treatment by emergency department personnel. Proper intervention by educated emergency care professionals may have prevented such deaths and disabilities. In spite of national pediatric trauma statistics, there are a limited number of medical centers throughout the country that have specialized pediatric centers. Nurses working in today's ED's must strengthen their pediatric emergency nursing skills in order to meet the needs of this diverse population and provide quality nursing care.

This two-day course through its lectures & interactive skill stations has become a standard certification for many emergency/critical care nurses across the world.
